That night, Tiki sat in her bedroom with all the lights blazing and the shades tightly drawn over the windows. Now that she knew what the Japanese woman was, she was scared of the dark, scared of every shadow and movement that loomed at the edge of her vision.

Sleep was out of the question, though she needed it badly. Tiki was too scared that she might wake up with the Japanese woman staring her in the face.

The very thought of that ghost made her shiver with fear. So did the sight of the tattooed characters that no one else could see on Tiki's flesh.

Like the Lovemother and Bitch at the health club, Crystal hadn't seen a trace of the characters. Worse, when Tiki had insisted they were there, Crystal had looked at her like she was crazy. Tiki had quickly shut up about them...but she'd still had to act stone-cold sane and beg like mad to get Crystal not to take her to the doctor.

She'd had to beg even harder to get Crystal to agree to let her try First Rite again the next day. Crystal had wanted her to rest for a while, but Tiki had wanted to get right back on the horse. She'd heard too many stories about Bitches who'd lost their nerve and never followed through to become Angels.

"It's not unusual for Bitches to flame out on their First Rites," Crystal had told her. "It can be a very stressful, emotional time."

Tiki had said that Crystal was absolutely right, but she felt much better now. The incident at the health club had knocked the stress right out of her, she had said.

As much of a lie as that had been, it had worked. Crystal had ordered her to get a good night's sleep, and then she'd left, promising to swing by early in the morning to help her get ready for a third shot at Luke.

Now, if only Tiki had the slightest hope that her third shot would turn out better than the first two failures. If only she knew that the Japanese ghost wouldn't haunt her again.

Maybe if I knew why she was haunting me in the first place...but she's never said a word to me.

Or has she?

As the sleepless hours crawled past, Tiki stared at the characters on her body. Though she couldn't read them, she knew the symbols were from a written language. Maybe they spelled out a message.

If she could decipher them, maybe they would give her a clue to how to drive away the ghost.

Sitting at her computer workstation, Tiki used a glowing bio-stylus to copy the characters on her graphics tablet. The ones on her throat were hardest to get right, since she had to use a mirror to see them, and the reflection turned them backwards.

Once Tiki had the characters copied, she searched the Fevernet for matching images. Within moments, results flashed onto the smart-bug bacterial colony screen floating over her desk.

She'd guessed right that the woman was Japanese, for the characters included Japanese symbols.
